ACTIVITIES

Game drives are conducted by our professional and experienced guides in open-sided 4x4 vehicles. Choices of early morning, afternoon and night drives are on offer, affording you the opportunity to explore this beautiful desert area well-known for sightings of the Kalahari Lion. Occasional sightings of leopard, cheetah and perhaps the rare opportunity of spotting the elusive Brown Hyena that frequents the area are the order of the day. Regular sightings of antelope species such as Oryx, Blue Wildebeest, Eland and not to mention the smaller mammals like the black-backed jackal or ground squirrel to name a few. The area also allows for excellent bird watching, with over 250 bird species positively identified.

Another way to explore the surrounding area is on foot, led by our resident San People who will take you on an authentic, adventurous and informative guided walk. The walk is a journey into the past of these gentle people, where they will impart information of their ancient culture and how they once survived in these harsh and arid conditions. Being great story tellers, you will be taken back in time as they reminisce on how they once lived. They will also share their knowledge of the smaller creatures, as well as the fauna and flora of the Kalahari. The walks are done at a pace you are comfortable with and a truly peaceful way to get closer to the environment.

For the more adventurous, let your senses be pricked by the smells, sounds and sights of the Kalahari as you enjoy a guided quad bike safari. Quad bike safaris are done at a slow pace around the lodge and are only applicable to children 16 years and older at the lodge manager's discretion.

After a full day of activities and a delectable dinner, nothing beats taking a drive to our elevated star gazing deck, where on a clear night, the Kalahari sky comes alive, showing off brilliant stars and crystal clear views of the Milky Way.

GETTING THERE

We are in the heart of the Kalahari, bordering the Central Kalahari Game Reserve at the northern boundaries; an approximate 3 hour drive from Deception Valley. The nearest village is Rakops, about 1 hour 45 minute drive to the east. The small town of Maun is your closest port of call for "shopping", which is approximately 2 and a half hours drive further north.

For the adventurous "self-drivers" we strongly recommend that you make use of a 4x4 vehicle. For the more fainthearted who want to visit, Haina Kalahari Lodge offers a licensed public airstrip, Licensed to a maximum of 5700KG, or fly in with accredited tour operators or air charters. Permission to land on the airstrip is required prior to arrival.

FROM SOUTH AFRICA

The most obvious and practical route from the South is via Rakops. The last refueling stop on the main tar road is at Mopipi, after Letlhakane and before Rakops. Haina Kalahari's turn off is 23kms passed the Rakops tower (Do not take the Central Kalahari Game Reserve Turn off which is just past the Rakops turn off) . Turn left at the "Haina Kalahari Lodge" signboard and follow the cut line for +/- 75 km to Haina Kalahari Lodge. You pass through Kuke Corner Veterinary gate.

***Please take note that Mopipi is the last trust worthy fuel supply, where there is diesel and unleaded petrol. Your next fuel stop is Maun.

FROM MAUN

Follow road to Makalamabedi. Turn of +/- 52 km from Maun. Turn right before Makalamabedi Veterinary fence (see Haina sign). This is the best option if you carry meat. Drive along the veterinary fence line to Kuke gate. Turn right along the Central Kalahari Game Reserve fence line for approximately 22 km. If you do not carry meat, continue through the Veterinary Fence Gate and turn sharp right passed the Police base and carry on along the fence line up to the Kuke gate. Enter through the Kuke gate and follow the fence line. Drive along the CKGR fence line until you find the Haina sign. Turn right at Haina Kalahari Lodge sign.

FROM GHANZI

Take the tar toad towards Maun. Turn right directly after Kuke Vetinary fence and drive along the cutline fence towards the east. Follow 2 spoor sand road adjacent to Central Kalahari Game Reserve for 130 km to the Haina Kalahari Lodge signboard on your left.

LANDING STRIP INFORMATION
